Atovaquone is a ubiquinone analogue used to treat infections caused by protozoa and is often combined with other drugs to treat specific infections it is the drug of choice for Babesia gibsoni Infection in Dogs and Cytauxzoon felis infection in catsProguanil, also known as chloroguanide, Is a medication used to treat infections caused by protozoa and often used together with atovaquone.
Composition: Each uncoated chewable tablet contains Atovaquone USP 250mg and Proguanil Hydrochloride IP 100mg
Dosage:
Atovaquone 12.5 mg/kg b.wt and Proguanil 5 mg/kg bwt in combination with Azithromycin 10mg/kg b.wt and Artesunate 12.5mg/kg b. wt once in a day for 10 days.
Pharmacodynamics: Alovaquone is a competitive inhibitor of ubiquinol,specifically inhibiting the mitochondrial electron transport chain at the bc1 complex. Inhibition of bct results in a loss of mitochondrial function. Atovaquone. potentially causes inhibition of both purine and pyrimidine biosynthesis Proguanil is a biguanide derivative that is converted to an active metabolite called cycloguanil It exerts its anti-parasitic action by inhibiting parasitic dihydrofolate reductase enzyme. It has casual prophylactic and suppressive activity against parasite and cures the acute infection.
Indications:
It is indicated with combination drug for the treatment of Relapsing Babesiosis in dogs, The combination drugs include ATAVON-PRO, MACROZEE & ARTBABE for the treatment of Relapsing Babesiosis in Dogs and ATAVON-PRO, MACROZEE, ARTEBABE and IMIDOPET for the treatment of Tick Fever caused by mixed infection due to B. canis, B. gibsoni, E. canis, A. platys & H. canis.
Directions for Use: Use either whole tablet or split it as required foradministration. Always Give fatty diet while giving ATAVON-PRO to increase the Drug absorption. In case of Azithromycin, it should be given in empty stomach preferably in morning time.
Side effects: Alovaquone has a favourable safety profile and appears to have no report of adverse reactions. Proguanil has a high safety margin and reports of severe adverse effects are rare. Temporary hair loss and mouth ulcers may occur with prolonged usage.
Caution: No specific caution is indicated for the Atovaquone and Proguanil HCI inpregnancy and young animals.
Storage: Store th a cool, dry place at room temperature. Keep the medicine out of reach of children.
